Jessie, Annadel, Delphina, Cooper. Finally, a really nice Santa that was genuinely warm instead of weird-scary.

“Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil’s pawn. Alone among God’s primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother’s land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.”
Cornelius reading from the Sacred Scrolls - Planet of the Apes, 1968

The Fragmentation of Mind

Been thinking quite a bit about the increasing importance of creative designers in a world inundated with information, accelerated to the point of absurdity. This era of instantaneous global communication in small, agile packets brings with it a euphoric connection with humanity at the same time that it underscores the utter shallowness of much of it. It’s a living contradiction, faster than a speeding bullet, propelled along a string of 1’s and 0’s. It’s a thrill ride of punctuated evolution. It’s fragmented my mind.

So. Back to the designer. Why is the skill important today? Because a designer is a creator of systems. The best designers take data and craft it into systems of communication that are as concise as they are beautiful. A well designed system wrangles language, symbols, color, emotion, — you name it — to present a cohesive nugget of truth. To navigate the information maelstrom we need maps and signs to orient us. We need grounding so our minds don’t become so fragmented from sensory overload that meaningful thought grinds to a halt.

Designers are the cartographers of the mind.

We’ve arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
